How Do You Choose a Hair Extensions Salon?

Pick the salon that puts a consultation before everything else and can place more than one type of extension. Those two things tell you more than a photo gallery ever will.

Plenty of salons offer hair extensions in Cary. Choosing one is harder, because extensions are not a single appointment. You are choosing a method, a stylist, and a plan for the months after the install. Here is how we at Lumina Extensions & Beauty Bar would size it up from your side of the chair.

What should you look for in a Cary extension salon?

Look for four things: a consultation before any hair is ordered, more than one attachment method, a stylist who can show you work that has grown out, and a clear plan for upkeep and removal. A salon that checks those boxes is matching extensions to your hair. One that skips them is matching your hair to its one method.

  • A consultation first. Your hair gets looked at in person, in good light, in front of the stylist. A quote over the phone is a guess. We run a consultation before every new extension install.
  • More than one method. A salon with a single method tends to fit that method to every client.
  • Work that holds up past install day. An install looks good in a photo taken that afternoon. Ask what the same hair looked like at the move-up visit. You can scroll through our recent extension work on our Instagram.
  • A plan for the months after. Extensions are a commitment on both sides. Ask who handles the move-up, who handles removal, and what each visit involves before you book the install.

We opened in 2021 at 605 Mills Park Dr in west Cary, and extensions and hair loss work are the center of the studio. Our hair extensions page shows how we approach it.

Why does the number of extension methods matter?

Each method carries weight differently, and your hair decides which one it can handle.

Fine hair shows the difference fastest. An attachment that sits comfortably on thick hair can pull on fine strands. Thinning hair needs more thought still, because where the hair has thinned changes where an attachment can sit.

Kristi Gillikin, our owner, is certified in Elevate Mesh Integration and Advanced Mesh Integration. Her certifications also include the IBE, NBR, and Laced extension methods, plus Reiki. That range is why we can recommend what fits your hair instead of what fits our one tool.

There are two main directions a plan can take.

Extensions for length and fullness

These add hair across the head, for length, volume, or both. They suit clients who have healthy density and want more of it.

The part people forget is what happens as your own hair grows. Every attachment rides down the hair with your growth, so the longer it sits, the farther it moves from the scalp. That distance is what changes the blend.

At a move-up we take the section down and look at your own hair before anything goes back in. We check the attachment points for tension, clear the shed hair collected there, look at the condition of your ends, and comb the section out clean. Then the row goes back closer to the root.

That is why the method has to match your routine. A client who washes often and works out daily needs a different plan than one who wants low upkeep.

Enhancements for thinning areas

These add hair only where yours has thinned, through mesh integration or a topper. They suit clients whose goal is density in a specific area, not length everywhere.

The idea is to put the added hair where the gap is, then blend it with your own hair so the part and the hairline read as yours. Mesh integration uses a lightweight base set within your own hair at the thinning area. A topper covers the area from above.

Choosing between them starts at the part. We look at how much of your own density is left there, how wide the thinning runs, where your hairline sits, and how you like to wear your hair. A part you wear in the same place every day changes the answer.

Upkeep here is about the blend. As your own hair grows, the added hair is adjusted so it keeps blending with your own hair. Our custom hair enhancements page explains how that differs from standard extensions. It is the work our studio was built around.

You may arrive knowing which direction you want, or not. That is fine. Sorting it out is what the consultation is for.

What does a hair extension consultation cover?

A good consultation answers one question: which method fits your hair, and what will it take to keep it looking natural? At our studio it comes before every new extension install or hair loss service. No new install starts without one. Move Ups and Refits for extensions already in can be booked directly.

Use this as a checklist at any salon you visit.

  1. Show your hair as you wear it day to day. Done right, the stylist looks at your density, your ends, and your part before suggesting anything.
  2. Say what you want. Length, fullness, and filling in thin areas are three different goals. Done right, you get questions, not a catalog.
  3. Ask which method fits and why. Done right, the reason is tied to your hair, not to a brand name.
  4. Ask what upkeep looks like. That covers how often you return, how you wash, and how you sleep. Done right, you can picture your own routine.
  5. Ask about removal. Done right, you hear who does it and what it involves.
  6. Ask what the quote covers. Done right, you understand what is included and what is not.

You are never rushed through any of it. You should leave knowing the plan, not feeling sold to.

And if you are nervous, say so. It is fine to arrive unsure whether you are a candidate. We would rather hear that at the start than have you sit through a visit holding it in.

Can you get extensions if your hair is thinning?

Often, yes. Thinning changes which method fits and where it sits, so the answer comes from a consultation, not a guess.

Our owner built the studio around this work as a Hair Loss & Extension Specialist, and the private room exists for clients with hair loss, whether it comes from thinning, alopecia, or treatment. You are not on display here.

For thinning areas, mesh integration and custom enhancements can add density where you need it. The aim is hair that feels like yours, not like you're wearing a wig. Lightweight, natural, and blended into your own hair is the standard we hold ourselves to.

We offer cosmetic solutions. We do not diagnose or treat the cause of hair loss. If you are unsure why your hair is changing, a doctor is the right first call.

What if it is your first time at a new salon?

It is normal to feel unsure before a first visit, especially when the service is a big one. What helps most is knowing there is no pressure to decide on the spot.

If you are new to extensions, your first visit with us is the consultation. You sit down, we look at your hair, and we talk through what you want. Nothing is ordered or placed until you understand the plan.

One of our clients put it this way in a Google review: "I didn’t go in there with a plan and they knew exactly what to do for me!" Knowing what fits, without rushing you to decide, is what we aim for.

What shapes your investment

Your plan follows your hair, and your investment follows the plan. Cost is a fair question before a first extension visit, so here is what moves it.

The main factors are how much hair your goal calls for, which method fits, your length and color match, and how many move-up visits you expect to book. Extensions are an investment of time and money. You should see the full shape of it before you commit to anything.

Before you book anywhere, get three answers in plain words: what the quote includes, what a move-up visit involves, and what removal involves. If a salon cannot say, you will find out the hard way later. Current pricing lives on our service menu, and the consultation turns it into your plan.

What do people get wrong when choosing an extension salon?

It is easy to choose by photo and by quote and skip the questions that decide how the hair looks months later. Here are common mistakes.

  • Judging by install-day photos. Fresh work looks good on install day. The move-up visit tells you more.
  • Comparing quotes without comparing what is inside them. Two numbers mean nothing until you know the method, the amount of hair, and the upkeep behind each.
  • Skipping the color conversation. Extensions blend only as well as the match. Color and cut shape the blend as much as the hair does. We do both in the same studio, so the blend is planned, not patched. Our hair color page covers how we approach it.
  • Treating removal as an afterthought. A skilled install and a skilled removal both protect your own hair. Our post on whether extensions damage your hair covers what matters most.

When do you come back, and what do you do at home?

Your move-up comes when your own growth has carried the attachment far enough from the scalp that the blend starts to change. Your method and your growth rate set that date. We set it with you once the hair is in, then adjust it at each move-up. Our post on how long extensions last goes deeper.

Two weeks in, the install is no longer new and your routine takes over. This is where results are kept or lost. Four habits matter most.

  1. Brush from the ends up, holding your hair near the root so nothing tugs.
  2. Braid loosely or tie your hair back before bed.
  3. Wash gently, and ask your stylist which products to keep away from your attachment points.
  4. Book your move-up before you need it, not after something slips.

Do those four and you stop thinking about your hair. That is the point.

Does a calm studio change the experience?

Yes. In a calm, unhurried studio you are never rushed, and that matters most on a first visit.

If you have ever felt invisible in a busy salon, you know the feeling we mean. One of our Google reviews mentions the friendly and calming atmosphere. We take that as a sign the studio is doing its job.

The goal of every visit is simple. You walk out feeling like yourself again, with hair that looks like your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pick a good hair salon for extensions?

Start with the consultation. A good salon looks at your hair in person, offers more than one method, and explains upkeep and removal before you commit. If a salon quotes you over the phone without seeing your hair, keep looking.

Is there a salon in Cary that specializes in hair extensions?

Yes. Lumina Extensions & Beauty Bar at 605 Mills Park Dr in west Cary is built around custom hair extensions and custom hair enhancements, and we have been open since 2021. Every new extension service starts with a consultation.

Do I need a consultation before getting extensions?

Yes. We require one before every new extension, enhancement, or hair loss service, because the right method depends on your hair in person. It is also where you ask about upkeep and removal.

Can extensions work if my hair is fine or thinning?

Often, yes, with the right method. Fine hair and thinning areas call for different choices than thick hair, and mesh integration or a custom enhancement may fit better than full extensions. We decide that with you at the consultation, and we cannot promise a result before seeing your hair.

How long do hair extensions last?

Our service menu puts the general range at 3 to 5 months before a move-up or removal. Your method and how fast your own hair grows set your exact window. The move-up comes when your growth has carried the attachment far enough from the scalp that the blend changes. Your care routine at home moves that date too.

How much do hair extensions cost in Cary?

It depends on the method, how much hair your goal needs, your length and color match, and how many move-up visits you plan for. Current pricing lives on our service menu. The consultation is where your plan and its cost come together.

Do you serve clients outside Cary?

Yes. Our Areas We Serve page lists the towns we welcome clients from. Morrisville, Apex, and Holly Springs are a short drive from our studio.
